Writing Lessons with Alphabet Objects Coins

Writing Lessons with Alphabet Objects Coins

While working with my boys this week, we came up with several fun ways to incorporate the Alphabet Objects Coins into our spelling and composition practice.

Composing Sentences

For my 10 year old, we are working on composing sentences--remembering to begin with a capital letter, finish with punctuation, and have a complete thought. Here's how he used the coins as inspiration for his writing:

  1. Pick two picture coins from the box.
  2. Think of a sentence that includes both words from the coins.
  3. Write the sentence with focus on proper capitalization, punctuation, and spelling.

Very simple and straightforward. The coins helped him come up with ideas of what to write and most were silly and entertaining to read.

Spelling Practice

For my 8 year old, he is working on spelling exercises. We used the picture coins from the Alphabet Objects Set to give him some new words to learn. We used them in a couple of different ways.

RHYMING WORDS

  1. Materials Needed: Hundred Frame, Alphabet Coins, Alphabet Objects Coins, and optional, Spelling Tray.
  2. Preparation: Sort through the coins to find ones that rhyme and lay them out on the Hundred Frame. Also, lay out Alphabet Letters a through z on the Hundred Frame.
  3. Activity: Place the two rhyming coins in the Spelling Tray. Have your child pick one of the images and spell out the word with the Alphabet Coins. After spelling the word, write it into their Notebook. Repeat with the other rhyming word. Then swap out for the next set.
  4. If a word is too long for your Spelling Tray, you can spell it on the Hundred Frame.

SPELLING WORDS

  1. Materials Needed: Hundred Frame, Alphabet Coins, and Alphabet Objects Coins.
  2. Activity: Have your child randomly pick an Alphabet Object Coin and place it on the Hundred Frame. Then have them sound it out and use the Alphabet Coins to spell the word on the Hundred Frame. After filling up the board with ten words, write the words in their Notebook.

Here's a list of all the materials we used in these lessons:
